Lajovic fended off three match points and beat Andreev

In the 'German group', the current Davis Cup-winner, Serbia, captured the first singles victory at the POWER HORSE WORLD TEAM CUP. The up-and-coming player, Dusan Lajovic, beat the favoured player, Igor Andreev, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6) after fending off three match points. Due to a leg injury, Lajovic replaced Janko Tipsarevic. The top singles match will be played by Mikhail Youzhny and Viktor Troicki.

On Centre Court II at the Rochusclub in Dusseldorf, Andreev, who had fended off three match points to beat the Spaniard, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, at first clearly dominated the 20-year old player, Lajovic. The 27-year old Russian took the first set with his powerful baseline game after approximately half an hour. In the second set Lajovic found his way into the game, however did not succeed in capturing any break chances. Lajovic fended off three match points at 3-6 before winning five successive points in order to win the set. The player from Serbia also remained the dominant player in the third set and was quickly up 4-1. Although Andreev closed the gap to 4-5 score, he was not able to turn the match around
