Florian Mayer takes lead for Germany
Florian
Mayer won the top singles match of the finals between Germany and
Argentina at the POWER HORSE WORLD TEAM CUP against Juan Monaco 7-6,
6-0, and thus captured the first point for Germany. In the end, Mayer
(no. 21 of the current world ranking) beat Monaco, who is ranked 17
places behind Mayer and who is considered as clay court specialist
without having too many problems.
Initially, the match was quite balanced. At the beginning, the 27-year old Argentinean broke Mayer’s serve, but was immediately broken back at 2-2. Also the outcome of the tiebreak was open until 4-4, before Mayer ‘wandered off’ to won the tiebreak 7-4 and thus the first set after 54 minutes.
In the second set, the 27-year old German broke his opponent right in the first game. Then, the righty from Argentina had to take an injury time out in order to get treatment on the index finger of his left hand. Afterwards, Mayer was quickly up 3-0; thereafter Monaco’s resistance was completely broken and Mayer converted his first match point to win the second set 6-0 after 92 minutes.
